Whimsical Woodland Branding Shoot
For someone who so covets her interior spaces, I sure do love the outdoors. I have always found so much inspiration in the textures, the ever changing light, the organic hues and rich sensations nature shares with us…for free! It’s better than any look book in my opinion. If I could blur the bounds between the interior and exterior of my home and exist in a combination of both at all times, I would much prefer it. However the Washington rain throws a bit of a wrench in that design. All of this is to say that I pull a lot of the natural world into my interior design. Give me indoor plants! Give me organic textures! Give me natural light! You don’t have to be an outdoor buff to appreciate these design features.
When I turned my thoughts toward a branding shoot for Fox Den Design, the idea of sitting in a stiff chair in a studio with box lights felt very off brand to me. I wanted to curate a space that I helped design, so what better place than my own living room? But that still felt slightly uninspired. Why not take my living room into the middle of the woods? Perfect!
My family thought I was crazy, but luckily my friend and insanely talented photographer Kendall Rock was totally on board. I packed up my entire living room and hiked it into the woods behind my childhood home, where we were surround by moss and lichen and the remnants of the treehouse my brother and I had grown up in. I felt completely at home, amidst the pieces of furniture I had chosen with love, as well as the woods I had spent so much of my time in. At first Kendall and I tried to keep my area rug spotless, but it was clear that was going to prove impossible, so we let a little dirt into the mix to blend that boundary between inside and outside. You can’t have one without the other.
My biggest take away from this photoshoot was this - design a space you love inspired by your passions so that you always feel right at home, and find people equally as crazy as you are to help you carry out your harebrained ideas. Life is so much more fun that way.
